Word Definition List
The following is a list of terms used on the Professional Web Pages website.
Domain Name
"The term domain name has multiple related meanings:
- A name that identifies a computer or computers on the internet. These names appear as a component of a Web site's URL, e.g. wikipedia.org. This type of domain name is also called a hostname.
- The product that domain name registrars provide to their customers. These names are often called registered domain names.
- Names used for other purposes in the Domain Name System (DNS), for example the special name which follows the @ sign in an email address, or the Top-level domains like .com, or the names used by the Session Initiation Protocol (VoIP), or DomainKeys.
They are sometimes colloquially (and incorrectly) referred to by marketers as ´web addresses´.
A web hosting service is a type of Internet hosting service that allows individuals and organizations to
provide their own websites accessible via the World Wide Web. Web hosts are companies that provide space
on a server they own for use by their clients as well as providing Internet connectivity, typically in a
data center. Webhosts can also provide data center space and connectivity to the Internet for servers
they do not own to be located in their data center, called colocation."

"An Internet service provider (abbr. ISP, also called Internet access provider or IAP) is a business
or organization that provides to consumers access to the Internet and related services. In the past, most
ISPs were run by the phone companies. Now, ISPs can be started by just about any individual or group with
sufficient money and expertise. In addition to Internet access via various technologies such as dial-up and
DSL, they may provide a combination of services including Internet transit, domain name registration and
hosting, web hosting, and colocation."
POP3
"In computing, local e-mail clients use the Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3), an application-layer
Internet standard protocol, to retrieve e-mail from a remote server over a TCP/IP connection. Nearly all
subscribers to individual Internet service provider e-mail accounts access their e-mail with client software
that uses POP3."
